Smogtown: The Lung-Burning History of Pollution in Los Angeles, by Chip Jacobs and William J. Kelly, published in 2008 by Abrams Press. Jacobs and Kelly are journalists; Kelly served in recent years as spokesman for the South Coast Air Quality Management District, giving him inside perspective on Los Angeles' air pollution control organization.
Clearing the Air in Los Angeles: The Fight Against Smog, by Carl R. Oliver, published in 2024 by The History Press. Oliver has been on faculty at Stanford and Loyola Marymount universities and served as adjunct at California Lutheran and the University of Redlands. With a PhD background, Oliver examines the organizational development process that emerged to identify the cause of Los Angeles' smog and to implement an effective cure.
Smog and Sunshine: The Surprising Story of How Los Angeles Cleaned Up Its Air, by Ann Carlson, published in 2026 by University of California Press. Carlson has been a professor at UCLA School of Law for nearly three decades; her work includes air pollution and climate change issues. Her book addresses policy fights and the scientists, lawyers, community members, and public officials who worked together to make Los Angeles' smog virtually disappear.
